Laminate Shingles

Laminate Shingles are probably the most common shingle on homes today. They are made from a fiberglass mat and coated in asphalt. They usually come with a lifetime warranty (which is most commonly around 30 years or the life of the shingle). Because of their construction they will most often come with a wind warranty from 110mph to 130mph. Laminate shingles, like Owens Corning Duration will give your roof a classic dimensional look.

Designer Shingles

Designer shingles are very similar to laminate shingles. They have the fiberglass mat and are dipped in asphalt. Where they differ from laminate shingles is the aesthetics. They are designed to mimic shake roofs or other high end roofing products. Usually, designer shingles, like CertainTeed Presidential are much heavier and less prone to wind damage. Residential roofers love to put designer shingles on homes because it gives you a upscale look for less.

Tile

Tile roofing can either be made from clay or concrete. While it is a much more costly roofing system it does come with quite a few benefits. The lifespan of a tile roof, like those made by Boral are about twice that of an asphalt shingle lasting around 50 years. It is fire, wind, water, and insect resistant. Due to the how heavy tile is, it may not work on every home. Homeowners that invest in a tile roof will most likely never have to put another roof on their home.

Stone Coated Steel

Stone coated steel roofs are exactly what they sound like. They are usually 26 or 24 gauge steel that have been coated with stone. The stone covering makes them more durable than your standard steel roof and prevents the normal dings and dent you would sustain on a standard steel roof. Stone coated Steel roofs like Decra come with a 50 year warranty and hold up well to high winds, rain, and hail. Residential roofers prefer these roofs because they will give you a stylish look with maximum durability.

Synthetic Shake

Synthetic shakes have replaced wood shakes. Most are made from recycled material. Synthetic shakes, like Cedur are quite light are quite light but surprisingly durable. The standard warranty on them are 50 years from many manufacturers. Due to the way they are made they are resistant to hail, high winds up to 180mph, mold, mildew, and fungus. Unlike your old wood shakes they are also fireproof.  Synthetic shakes give you the desired look of a wood shake without any of the downsides.

Every 5 years or after any major weather event such as hail or high winds. Also if you there are any visible leaks or shingles missing.

No. Most municipalities won’t allow what we call a layover.  It also immediately voids your shingle warranty.  Removing the old roof also allows us to inspect your decking and ensure the surface is solid.

One major benefit is a lot of insurance companies will offer a percentage off your premiums for going to a class lV Impact resistant roof. Also with the rubberized SBS backing that most manufacturers like GAF, Owens Corning and Malarkey use, it can help to prevent needing a full roof replacement on some of the smaller hail storms.

Proper ventilation can ensure the longevity of your roof. It is important to have the correct intake and exhaust vents so your roof can properly breathe.  Products like  the snow country ridge vent by GAF, or turtle vents by Lomanco, can provide you with the proper ventilation.  Without the correct ventilation your roof can bake from the inside out and decrease the number of years it will last.

We recommend having a roofer inspect the roof prior to filing the claim. This prevents you from having unnecessary claims against your homeowner’s insurance if there is not enough damage to exceed your deductible.
